Abstract

Background and Objective : Evaluation is considered as an integral component of academic planning system and the process of determining and providing necessary information about desirability of development program targets. The aim of present study was comprehensive evaluation of Islamic Azad University of Gorgan based on CIPP Model to provide useful information to help people to judge and improve the curriculum and develop the policy of programs .

Materials and Methods: The type of this study is educational evaluation. First, for conducting the evaluation, four domains of CIPP model including context, input, process and product was divided into more detailed parts, then primary standards were developed based on viewpoints of deans, head of department and faculty members of the university. After that, based on primary standards, measurement tools were created and administrated.

Results: The results showed that the average score of context, input, process and product from the perspective of faculty members, students, head of department, university administrators, professionals and graduates, is 2.55, 2.714, 3.208 and 2.91, respectively, which indicates the relative desirability of the university in these four factors. The total score of four factors is 2.845 indicating the relative desirability of the university in general.

Conclusion: Given the youth of Gorgan Azad University and low proportion of faculty members with full professor and associate professor degree, this level of desirability is acceptable.

Abstract

Background and Objective: Evaluation is one of the most important parts of any academic program. One of the latest methods used for clinical assessment is Log book, in which clinical activities and techniques based on educational objectives are recorded to establish learning, recognize inaccessible objectives and provide students’ continuous evaluation. The aim of this study was to assess midwifery students’ perspective about clinical evaluation based on Log- book.

Material and Methods: this descriptive research was conducted on 72 senior midwifery students who had been evaluated once by traditional method. In the beginning of the semester, a Log book accompanied by two check list of clinical evaluation and self evaluation are delivered to students. The instruments’, a researcher-made questionnaire, content and face validity were confirmed by a few faculty members of the university. Using SPSS software, we reported frequencies, mean and standard division of the data and analyzed by statistical tests.

Results: The students’ viewpoint on the effectiveness of Log book is 71% (nearly desirable) in maternal and child health education, 67.6 %( relatively desirable) in prenatal training, 75.3% (desirable) in gynecology clinic and 74.2 %( nearly desirable) in labour department.

Conclusion: In terms of our results, midwifery students’ perspective about using Log book in clinical evaluation is positive therefore, we suggest it as an effective evaluation method.

Abstract

Background and Objective : Teachers’ evaluation is considered one of the important strategies for education quality enhancement in universities. The objective of the current study was to investigate the students’ viewpoints about the evaluation criteria of teacher’s performance in theoretical courses in Golestan University of Medical Sciences.

Material and Methods: This cross- sectional study was conducted, in 2008, on 330 students of various disciplines. They were recruited via stratified random sampling and asked to fill out a valid and reliable questionnaire including 63 closed questions, which are related to individual, scientific and professional fields. Using SPSS software, we analyzed the data by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, and Anova and Pearson correlation.

Results: Seventy-three-point-three (n=242) are females and 26.7% (n=88) males. The most important factors in teacher's evaluation are Professional characteristics (4.22±0.42).Their scientific ability (4.14) and individual characteristics (3.86%), respectively, are the other factors. In professional characteristics, “The verbal skills and teaching methods " with the mean of 4.64 in scientific ability, "the knowledge and scientific power" with the mean of 4.65 and in individual issue, “patience and good humor" with the mean of 4.61 are the most important issues. Sixty-two-point-four percent of students believe that they are honest about their evaluation and 59.4% of them claim that their evaluation is reliable.

Conclusion : In spite of the importance of the scientific abilities, the verbal skills and teaching methods are considered the most prominent ones. The Students’ viewpoints can be used as an important part of teachers' evaluation for recognizing and eliminating the shortcomings.

Abstract

Background and Objective: nowadays, many menopausal women seek complementary and alternative drugs to relieve intensity of menopause symptoms. Most researchers are interested in studying medicinal plants containing isoflavones such as Red Clover with estrogen like properties. This study was conducted to determine the effect of red clover on the severity of physical menopause symptoms.

Material and Methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted on 72 menopausal women aged 50-59 in 2012. The participants of intervention group daily received two capsules containing 40 mg red clover for two months while the control ones received two capsules containing 40 mg starch in the same way. The data of baseline and the one of after two months were collected by demographic questionnaire and physical dimension of Menopausal Rating Scale and analyzed by SPSS version 14, using Man-Whitney and Student-t test.

Results: Based on the mean and SD of physical menopause symptoms, the severity of flushing, nocturnal sweating and heart discomfort was reduced significantly compared to control group. Furthermore, all physical menopause symptoms were remarkably diminished (P<0.05).

Conclusion: in accordance with the results, the capsule of red clover can be helpful in mitigating the severity of physical menopausal symptoms.

Abstract

Background and Objective: Direct observation of medical learner working on real patients is of paramount importance to assess practical competency. The direct observation clinical skills (DOPS) needs to be performed by direct observation of the learner and simultaneous evaluation by a questionnaire. This study aimed to assess the effect of clinical skills evaluation applied by DOPS on the clinical performance nursing students.
Material and Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 35 nursing students allocated randomly to case and control groups, 2013. The data was collected by a research-made questionnaire and analyzed by Wilcoxon, Mann Whitney, Spearman Coefficient (r = 0.05) and Kappa Coefficient (K= 0.6), using SPSS software.
Results: The participants of case group were evaluated three times by DOPS and the ones in control were assessed once by routine method. The DOPS average point of case group stage 2 and 3 was significantly higher than that of controls (0.0001). But in control group, no change in mean point and no promotion in clinical performance were observed.
Conclusion: The accurate implementation of DOPS can be a useful approach to connect knowledge to development of professional and skillful behavior. Thus, we recommend that the faculty members of nursing schools to focus on this way of evaluation and other modern approaches to develop continuing education.
