Abstract

Background and Objective: After coronary artery bypass surgery, pulmonary complications and oxygenation disorders are common, which have an important role in disablement and mortality. Different methods are used for improvement of pulmonary function and oxygenation. In this study we aimed at evaluating the effect of deep breathing exercise on arterial blood gases after CABG.

Material and methods: This clinical trial was conducted on fifty patients who had CABG in Chamran hospital and Sina heart center of Isfahan, 2012. The patients were randomly located in groups of intervention and control. The intervention was the use of deep breathing exercises initiated after extubation while just the routine breathing exercises were used for control group. Arterial blood gases of all patients were measured before surgery, after extubation, second and the third postoperative days, and analyzed by independent t test.

Results: the arterial blood gases measured in before surgery, after extubation, first and second days were the same in intervention and control groups. In the third postoperative day, there was a significant difference in the mean of arterial blood oxygen (81.3±4.6 vs. 72.7±7.1 respectively, p=0.01), arterial blood carbon dioxide (37 ±1.9 vs. 43.7±3.2 respectively, p >0.001) and oxygen saturation (96.8±1/4 vs. 90.5±2.1 respectively, p >0.001).

Conclusion : in terms of the results, the deep breathing exercise is significantly more effective in improvement of blood arterial gases parameters.

Abstract

Background: Physical activity reduces the risk of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). The precise mechanism for reducing CHD risk after physical activity has not been determined. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between physical activity and some biochemical parameters in patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS).
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on patients with ACS referring to Heshmat Medical Center in 2016. Convenient sampling method was used and 280 eligible patients with ACS were included in the study. For data gathering the checklist was used for demographic characteristics of patients and biochemical parameters and the Baecke Questionnaire was used to assess the patients’ physical activity. The data were analyzed in PASW Statistics for Windows, Version 18.0. Chicago: SPSS Inc. using Spearman correlation and multiple regression analyses. The significance level was set at P>0.05.
Results: The results showed that 67% of the patients were male and the mean age of the patients was 62.38±12.01 years. The BUN blood urea nitrogen (r=-.121 and -.177) and blood creatinine level (r=-.259 and -.185) had a significant correlation with physical activity in general and at the work hours, (P<.05). However, these correlations were poor, and only the correlation between the creatinine level and physical activity at work was moderate.
Conclusions: The correlation between physical activity level and biochemical parameters was not observed in our study. However, because the protective effect of physical activity on the cardiovascular system is clearly observed, it is suggested that appropriate physical activity and regular fitness be incorporated in the care plan for patients with cardiovascular diseases. Further clinical studies are recommended.

Abstract

Background: Lifestyle modification is an important factor in promoting the health of middle-aged women. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of telephone counseling on the nutritional status and physical activity of middle-aged women in Yazd, Iran.
Methods: This randomized controlled clinical trial was done on 50 middle-aged women during September to February 2017. Eligible women was recruited from religious places and then were randomly assigned into two intervention and control groups. The participants in the intervention group received the counseling program in 8 calls for 20-30 minutes twice per week. The control group received no intervention. Data were gathered using a health promoting life-style questionnaire for middle-aged women in three time points; before intervention, immediately, and one month after the intervention. Data were analyzed in SPSS 16 software using Chi-square, repeated measures ANOVA and independent t-test. A significance level was considered P<0.05.
Results: There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of nutritional status and physical activity (PA) before the intervention, but there was significant difference between them immediately and one month after the intervention. Also adjusting the baseline values, repeated measures ANOVA test showed a significantly premiere mean of nutritional status in telephone counseling compared to the control group (P<0.001).
Conclusion: The results of the study showed that telephone counseling significantly improved the lifestyle of the middle-aged women. Also, recommended that health care providers use of telephone counseling that effective and efficient tool for promoting women's health.

Abstract

Background: Due to advances in medicine and technology in recent years, the number of elderly has increased substantially in most countries. As a result, addressing factors influencing the elderly population to improve their physical, psychological, and cognitive status is of great importance. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between perceived social support and physical activity with the mood, physical fitness, and cognitive status of elderly people.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from April to September 2019 in Golestan province, Northeast of Iran. The sample consisted of 142 people over 60 years old (including 131 women and 11 men) who were selected using a random sampling method from Gorgan, Gonbad Kavous, Aliabad Katoul, and Azadshahr cities of Golestan province in 2019. Data was gathered using Perceived Social Support Scale, Geriatric Depression Scale, Wechsler Memory Scale, Rapid Assessment of Physical Activity Questionnaire, and Rikli and Jones’ physical fitness test for the elderly. Data were analyzed in SPSS-22 and Spearman correlation coefficient used to study the cooperation between variables.
Results: The finding showed that the mean age of participants was 66.56 years old and perceived social support had significant correlation with depression (r=-0.48, P<0.001) and memory (r=0.24, P=0.003). There was a significant correlation between physical activity and physical fitness (r=0.18, P=0.049), but no significant correlation were observed between physical activity with depression and memory. In addition, physical fitness had significant correlation with depression (r=0.27, P=0.001) and memory (r=0.27, P=0.001).
Conclusion: Perceived social support and physical activity can be considered important factors for improving the mood-cognitive-physical status of the elderly. Therefore, gerontologists, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists can improve the mood-cognitive-physical status of the elderly by improving social relationships and physical activity.

Abstract

Background: Anxiety is commonly experienced by patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), which is also closely related to the recovery of patients. This study aimed to determine effect of stretching combined with a slow deep breathing exercise (S+SDBE) on anxiety of patients after CABG.
Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, 50 eligible patients (aged 45-65 years) were randomly divided into experimental (n=25) and control (n=25) groups. The exercise program was performed by the experimental group in the morning and afternoon for 6 days. The patients in the control group received only routine care from the hospital. The Faces Anxiety Scale was used for assessment of anxiety. Data were analyzed using non-parametric tests at a significant level of 0.05.
Results: Data from 48 patients (35 males and 13 females) were analyzed. The mean age of the patients was 59.66 ± 4.1 years. The mean anxiety scores decreased significantly in the experimental group in the morning and afternoon compared with the control group (P<0.05). The anxiety scores differed significantly between the two groups in the morning of days 5 (P=0.025, effect size d=0.32) and 6 (P=0.017, effect size d=0.34) and in the afternoon of days 4 (P<0.001, effect size d=0.51), 5 (P<<0.001, effect size d=0.53), and 6 (P<<0.001, effect size d=0.61).
Conclusion: Based on the results,S+SDBE can be applied to decrease patients’ anxiety after CABG.
